Our Story

The Great Pastry Shop was a business started in 2017 by mother-daughter duo Rhiannon and Elsie who both trained as pastry chefs. Since then it has become a full family affair, mum and dad, sister and brothers!! 

 

Though we're trained in (and are fans of) European techniques, our style is also influenced by our heritage in England, Aotearoa New Zealand, and the diverse cuisines of our team of chefs, including those from South Korea and South America.


While we began at the Christchurch Farmers Market and the Art Centre Makete on Saturdays and Sundays, we later opened a little shop on Welles Street before relocating to Riverside Market.

It's been an absolute treat! 

 

In 2025, we opened the doors to our new home base, Okioki by Great Pastry Co. This is where our kitchen now runs from, allowing us to expand our creativity and menu. At Okioki, we also serve coffee and speciality drinks, alongside a wider selection of savoury offerings than you’ll find at our other two locations.

When it comes to flavours, you can’t go wrong, often drawing inspiration from old skool flavour combos - because rhubarb and custard, yum! We use real, fresh ingredients, and everything is made from scratch with love, technique, and generosity!
